Earlier in the day, American investor and Tesla CEO Elon Musk sent the footballing world into a frenzy after tweeting that he is ‘buying’ Manchester United. Musk, who is known for making such irreverent comments through his tweets, made another attempt of sending a wave of excitement as well as confusion across the football fans, especially those of United.

Even the Glazers family would have woken up to this shocker after Musk claimed he is ready to takeover the reigns. The Glazers family, current owners of Manchester United Football Club have been facing staunch protests from the fans urging them to sell the club to save it from further deterioration. While Musk may have given them a glimmer of hope, it was just another stunt by the bizman as later clarified by himself.

‘Long-running joke’ says Musk in reply to his tweet of buying Manchester United

Manchester United’s fans have long been at ‘war’ with the Glazers family, under whom the club has miserably failed to deliver. The people around the club have accused the Glazers of lack of investment, poor investment, unwarranted decisions, trophy-drought years and many more ill-fated situations the club is undergoing currently.

The supporters have even protested on the pitch of the Old Trafford, which has often resulted in security measures being compromised and postponement of the scheduled fixture. Even some of the United’s greats in Roy Keane, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, have called for a change ownership.

Amidst such ferocious urge by the supporters demanding the Glazers to sell the club, Elon Musk dropped a bombshell by claiming he is buying the club. In a series of tweets, which also held Musk’s political views, he wrote:

“To be clear, I support the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party! Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome.”

While some United fans rejoiced his tweet, the confusion it created was enormous. However, an account by the name Tesla Owners Silicon Valleys asked the Tesla CEO ‘Are you serious?’, to which Musk clarified his earlier tweet replying: “No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams.”

He further added in separate tweet that he would love the idea of buying United since he has been a childhood fan. “Although, if it were any team, it would be Man U. They were my fav team as a kid.”
As evident, United have literally become a laughing stock after their recent downfall. The club has been unable to stand on its legs since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club back in 2013. Add to the current situation, the Manchester United Supporters Trust has now issued a statement “demanding answers” from those in control of the matters at the club after a “humiliatingly bad” start to the season, losing back-to-back league games.
