After two long weeks of International football, the Barclays Premier League was back on Saturday and produced some exciting football. Many clubs suffered injuries to start players but they were not short of talent as they produced some interesting results.
Here are 5 things we learnt from this weekend’s Premier League fixtures
1. The Klopp’s era begins
The biggest headlines going into this week’s Premier League was the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool’ new manager. The club has already responded to the ‘full throttle football’ comments made by their new manager and showed some impressive energy on the day. But like under Rodger’s, the team failed to create enough chances and this will be the German’s biggest test at the Merseyside club. With many of his star players out, it will be good to see how he set’s his team up in the upcoming games.
2. Chelsea win, yet Mourinho makes headlines
The North London club had a horrific start to their new campaign but celebrated a rare victory against Aston Villa at the Bridge on Saturday. It was far from a convincing performance by the blues by they got all three points from the game. The talking points from the match should have been the comeback of Diego Costa and the victory but instead, Eden Hazard who was used only as a time wasting substitute stole the headlines. Leaving someone as gifted as Hazard on the bench has raised a lot of questions and Mourinho should do something quickly to stray out of media’s way who seem to latch on to everything the Portugal manager does.
3. Newcastle back with a bang
Newcastle United were not off to a great start and went into the International break in the 20th place in the table. But they were unlucky to be at that place and so they proved when they took on Norwich on Sunday. G Wijnaldum scored 4 times for the hosts as they ran away 6-2 winners on the day and played some exciting football. The team has finally got together and Steve McClaren will hope to build on the positives from this game and bring his club back to safety.
4. Sam Allardyce has his work cut out
While the whole footballing world is willing to give Klopp the time he needs at Liverpool, the same cannot be said about Sunderland’s new manager Sam Allardyce. Big Sam took charge of Sunderland during the International break and played his first game against West Brom away from home. The first half showed some promise but the Black Cats were done in by a goal from Saido Berahino and now find themselves at the bottom of the table with just 3 points from 9 games. Allardyce will have to work hard with his squad if he needs to justify his appointment as their manager.
5. Manchester city still rampant
The Manchester Clubs had a great week as both teams ran out comfortable winners. Manchester City blew past a hopeless Bournemouth side who were lost by the end of the match. Manuel Pellegrini will be overjoyed having seen two of his out-of form players put 5 goals past the newly promoted club. Raheem Sterling netted his first Premier League hat-trick as Wilfred Bony scored a brace for himself giving the Citizens a comfortable 5-1 victory on the day. There are not many teams at the moment in England that can stop their onslaught and they will hope that they can continue this form till the end of the season and lift another Premier League trophy.
