The UEFA Champions League saw another night of exciting encounters, which were headlined by Manchester City star Erling Haaland netting a brilliant five goals against RB Leipzig in the second leg of their round of 16 clash at the Etihad. Not only that the 22-year-old bagged five goals, he also shattered a couple of records, including one in the Champions League itself.

The Norwegian had a chance to score in the 22nd minute when a handball by Benjamin Henrichs resulted in a penalty for City, which Haaland converted with ease. In the next minute, he scored when Kevin De Bruyne’s shot hit the post and was deflected into the net by him. Just as City appeared to be finishing the first half, Ruben Dias’ header, saved by Janis Blaswich, was tapped into the net by the usual suspect, City’s No. 9.

The striker added another goal in the second half when a City corner fell on his foot after a couple of saves by Blaswich. He added the fifth four minutes later, capping off a five-star performance against Leipzig. Haaland has now scored 30 goals in 25 Champions League games, faster than anyone else in competition history. He is also the youngest to do so, at 22 years and 236 days.

Erling Haaland is the third player in UEFA Champions League history to score five goals in a single game, joining Luiz Adriano in October 2014 (Shakhtar Donetsk vs BATE Borisov) and Lionel Messi in March 2012 (Barcelona v Bayer Leverkusen). We now take a look at the Champions League list of top ten all-time scorers, which obviously is spearheaded by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

The top 10 highest goal scorers in the history of the Champions League

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated the Champions League top scorers list, with the Portuguese winning the competition five times and the Argentine captain four times. Ronaldo won the Champions League Top Scorer award for the single season once with Manchester United and the other six times with Real Madrid, while Lionel Messi won all six times with Barcelona.

Real Madrid legend Raul was the top scorer in the Champions League twice in a row in 2000 and 2001, and also the all-time top scorer before Ronaldo and Messi overtook him. Modern strikers Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema too have pipped Raul in the list, as the two rank third and fourth respectively behind Ronaldo and Messi.

Meanwhile, emerging hot-shots Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe are to crack in the top-10 of the Champions League top scorers. With 33 goals in 25 games in stints across RB Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City, Haaland is currently ranked 21st on the list. On the other hand, Mbappe’s 40 goals in 61 games with AS Monaco and PSG place him 19th on the table.
