With West Ham United and Swansea City losing their respective games and Manchester United beating Arsenal, the Red Devils have become the real winners of this Barclays Premier League weekend as they climb three positions to move into the coveted top four positions. On the other hand though, Liverpool failed to capitalize on other teams slipping up as they lost their fourth straight match in all competitions to increase the gap between their rivals.
Winners of week – Manchester United
Going into the weekend West Ham were sitting at fourth place, followed by Swansea City in fifth and Arsenal in sixth place. If United (who were sitting in seventh) had to move in to the top four, they not alone have to beat Arsenal but, also needed to hope that the teams above them crumble. To United’s relief which is exactly what had happened.
Swansea travelled to Etihad stadium to face United’s rival city and West Ham also traveled to Merseyside to play against Everton. Both the Blues helped the Reds cause by beating their opponents. City beat Swansea 2-1, which is the same margin by which Everton beat West Ham United. So United going into the late kickoff against Arsenal at Emirates on Saturday knew exactly what they had to do to get into the top four.
Though United did not have a great start to the game, they managed to stay in the match mainly thanks to their spectacular Spanish goalkeeper David Degea. As the match went on, United slowly started to gain momentum in the match and started to get behind the Gunners defence quite often. United had luck on their side as they took the lead in the second half thanks to an own goal by Gibbs. However, the second from Rooney was no luck as United produced one of the blistering counter attacks to seal the game. A late strike by returning Giroud did cause some panic among United fans but, the team hanged on for their first away win of the season. Finally United produce that big scalp to get everyone on their side and the league table now looks lot better from United’s perspective.
Losers of the week – Liverpool
With the teams above them such as Swansea City, West Ham United and Arsenal slipping, Liverpool had the opportunity to close down on their rivals for the fourth place; however the Merseyside outfit slipped again and let the gap between them and the fourth spot drift further away.
Going into the weekend Liverpool were sitting 11th in the table. After failing to win their last three league matches, it was a must win for the Reds. But, Liverpool failed to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them as they dropped to 12th position in the table after losing to Crystal Palace.
Lambert finally broke his premier league duck to put Liverpool ahead within two minutes of the game. As often it happened this season, Liverpool failed to take advantage of the situation and let Gayle score the equalizer in the first half. Goals Ledley and Jedinak in the second half rounded off the misery for Liverpool.
With this result, Liverpool is winless in their last four league matches. Further, with their rivals Manchester United, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle winning this weekend meant the gap between Liverpool and the fourth spot has already rose to five points. If Liverpool is serious about getting into top four again, they have got to put together some wins under their belt sooner than later.
