Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany has leapt into the defense of the club after they find themselves at war against the Premier League who have charged the defending league champions with over 100 counts of financial breaches. After an investigation of four years, the Premier League has accused that City has committed a shocking 115 financial rule violations between 2008 and 2018, a period Kompany played for the club in.

While numerous penalties are being touted if the charges are proven and Manchester City are found guilty, many of their fellow league rivals have demanded that the club be right away relegated to the EFL as a severe punishment which would set an example as well. Kompany has now slammed them, aiming a dig that ‘there’s a lot of righteousness in the world to come and tell you what you’ve done wrong’.

Kompany once again stands as a defender for Manchester City

Manchester City have been accused of a number of wrong doings, right from their non cooperation with the Premier League to conduct a clean audit of their finances, to failing to disclose the payment of the salaries of their players as well as former manager Roberto Mancini from 2010 to 2016. Kompany, who was a key part of the team during tha time, leading them to four Premier League titles told Sky Sports:

“I kind of look at it and sometimes roll my eyes a little bit. No doubt there’s a lot of righteousness in the world to come and tell you what you’ve done wrong, and then if everybody looks at themselves, I think the football industry in general is not one that can afford to point the finger too many times

“I think all of you will have a little bit of a smile on your face to know what the football industry is about. I’m very sceptical when people start pointing fingers. Do the best for yourself and let’s try and improve all the time but I’m a little bit sceptical when the fingers get pointed easily.”

Kompany plied his trade for Manchester City over a decade, from 2008 to 2019. He first wore the captain’s armband for the Blues during the 2010/11 season in the absence of regular skipper Carlos Tevez, and then inherited it on permanent basis the following season. Kompany went on to make a staggering 360 appearances for the club, winning ten major honors. Since his retirement in 2020, he has taken up the managerial job and is currently at the helm of Championship side Burnley.

Apart from a possible relegation, many other punishments are being touted for the seven time league winners, such as points-deduction, heavy fines, and even stripping-off of their league medals. Meanwhile, Manchester City have responded to Premier League’s accusations that they “welcome a the review of this matter by an independent commission”, and are ready to fully cooperate. The club said in its official response:

“Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.

“The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.

“As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”
