The post-Suarez era for Liverpool Football Club has not been successful as they failed to win any silverware and also slipped out of the top four of the Premier League. The last season, they did not create enough chances for their forwards and paid the price by scoring almost half of the goals they scored in the previous season.
However, Brendan Rodgers has gone a spending spree and has bought in 7 new faces to Anfield. Clyne, Gomez, Origi, Milner, Benteke and Firmino have all joined the club and have given the team a strong look. They did not do enough in the first two games but came out with all three points from both games which will give them plenty of confidence for the games to come.
In this article, we will try and understand what Liverpool can do before the transfer window closes so as to give them the best chance to launch proper title challenge or at least to compete in all the competitions.
Last year, the Reds were not only bad in attack but also conceded some needless goals. Lovren has not been able to prove the worth of his price tag and Sakho though good at times can be a liability. Rodgers has somewhat addressed the problems in attack with a number of new signings and the club has a strong attacking squad to go with.
But the defense still needs to be stabilized and the manager may still need a center half who can dictate terms and form an able partnership with Martin Skrtel who has been confident at the back. They also need a bit of cover on the flanks. Moreno and Gomez will surely rotate on one flank but the club needs an able replacement for the right back Nathaniel Clyne.
Clyne has already shown the club what they missed last season with solid defensive performances in the opening two games and if he misses a game, Liverpool will be vulnerable in that area. Rodgers will have to make sure he has a solid replacement for the former Southampton man. The Club though made some good purchases in the attacking front, they still need a top class mid-fielder who can control the game in the middle as well as pop up with goals when needed.
A goal scoring mid-fielder is always important for a club and Liverpool need a deep-lying mid-fielder who can not only create chances but also finish well when at the end of a chance. Asier Illaramendi who is seen as surplus to requirements at Real Madrid may prove to be the right player for the Kop as he can provide the defensive platform for the likes of Henderson and Milner to launch players on the attack.
Aymen Abdennour from Monaco is also an option for Rodgers at the Center back position. He is very good in the air and can give a lot of defensive solidarity to the Reds back four. Layvin Kurzawa is wing back that Liverpool can look to purchase after missing out on Lucas Digne from PSG. The have reportedly had their bid accepted for Dortmund mid-fielder Mkhitaryan. He will be a good addition to the squad but may pose a bit of a problem for the manager with all the options he has in the mid-field.
The Liverpool squad looks stronger than it did in the previous season but is still a team in progress. With young players all around the field, they can only get better and the times look good for the club going into the days to come.
