Tottenham Hotspur Join Race To Sign Manchester United Star 1

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly entered the race to sign Manchester United defender Luke Shaw.

The England international was signed by the Red Devils in a £30 million deal from Southampton in June 2014 but has struggled to replicate the form that made him one of the most highly-rated left backs in the Premier League. He made 20 appearances in his debut campaign for the Red Devils but then missed almost the whole of last season following a horror leg break in an Europa League clash in September.

And his condition has only deteriorated under Jose Mourinho who arrived at Old Trafford this term. The 21-year-old has failed to convince Mourinho and has fallen down the pecking order to the extent he is fourth-choice left-back behind Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian.

Moreover, the way events have turned out at Old Trafford this season, it is quite unlikely that Mourinho would keep Shaw after this season. The Portuguese tactician had publicly criticised the former Southampton star over his injury problems and performances.

He also pointed out the mistake made by Shaw in United’s 3-1 defeat at Watford in September. After a lot of speculations, Shaw made his return in the 4-0 victory over Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup on January 29 but was then omitted from the matchday squads for the next two games- a clear indication that Mourinho does not rate the defender highly.

And Yahoo Sports has now claimed that Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen to cash in on the situation and wants to bring the defender at White Hart Lane. Pochettino had managed Shaw during his stint with the Saints and is still a huge admirer of his former player. The report further claimed that a swap deal involving Shaw and Danny Rose is also a possibility.

Last week, player-turned-pundit Paul Walsh had said Mourinho might go for Rose in summer. The Spurs star is one of the finest players in the Premier League at his position and with United struggling to find a quality player for the position, they might make a bid for the England international.

“[Rose] would be a player that Manchester United would certainly want,”  Walsh told Football Whispers.

“It sounds like [Mourinho’s] made his mind up about Luke Shaw so there’s a possible swap they could maybe look at that.”
