Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has dismissed the reports that Manchester United are plotting a potential move for a Barcelona star. However, the player in discussion here is not the Red Devils’ long term target Frenkie de Jon, but Antoine Griezmann. United have been constantly linked with the 31-year-old as Erik ten Hag continues to poach top talents for his team.

Manchester United were looking to overhaul their squad this summer and according to the Athletic, Griezmann once again popped up on their list. The Frenchman was tipped with a move to Old Trafford a few years back as well, but instead chose Barcelona over United in 2019. The Catalans triggered the Atletico Madrid attacker’s €120million release clause in the summer of 2019 to acquire his services. However, a move to Camp Nou has proved to be a failed one for Griezmann, who is back at Wanda Metropolitano on loan.

Romano dismisses Manchester United’s Griezmann links

Antoine Griezmann’s big money move to the Catalan club didn’t yield much as he had to return to his former club Atletico on loan last summer for a loan-fee of €10 million. While at Camp Nou, the 31-year-old could only manage 35 goals in 107 games as he failed to click alongside the majestic Lionel Messi.

Barca already were under a debt of €1.5 billion and Griezmann’s high salary was just adding up to worsen their financial situation. As a result, the club took a massive economic hit to send him to Atletico on a two-year loan, with option to buy. However, Atletico could be obliged to trigger the €40 million buy option inserted in his loan deal only when he plays a certain amount of minutes.

On the other hand, the constant change of clubs hasn’t helped Griezmann who has only netted 3 goals in 8 games so far. Manchester United were reportedly keen to bring in the World Cup winner to Old Trafford this summer and end his miseries once and for all. However, Romano has revealed that ‘there’s not a lot’ to the Griezmann-to-Man United rumours. In his CaughtOffside’s column, the Italian has said:

“I’m aware of speculation that Manchester United enquired about Antoine Griezmann in the summer, but my understanding is there’s not a lot to it. At the moment, the situation is still not clear between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona for Griezmann so there’s still nothing happening with other clubs as of now. Griezmann is 100% focused on Atletico Madrid.”

Meanwhile, to avoid paying Barca the €40 million, Atletico coach Diego Simeone has been benching the France forward and bringing him on only after the 60-minute mark. Barcelona have been frustrated by Atletico’s such antics and are even ready to drag them to court to demand their €40 million. Whereas the Colchoneros feel they are well within their rights to sub on their striker after the hour mark.

The current scenario also won’t help Griezmann to be in his best shape with France for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The forward has been crucial to Didier Deschamps’ national team set-up, netting 42 goals in 108 games under him. Deschamps certainly won’t be happy with the way his star forward has performed but has enough firepower already in Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe to go without Griezmann.
