Uruguay midfielder, Lucas Torreira has confirmed he is close to completing a move to Arsenal, as he prepares for a medical at the Premier League club ahead of the new season which begins August 11.
Torreira played two seasons with Sampdoria in Serie A.
The midfielder made five appearances at the World Cup. He confirmed he is all set for a medical at Arsenal. And, it denied him a chance to return to Montevideo with the rest of the Uruguay squad. The midfielder said,
“I was very happy to leave for Uruguay with my team-mates. But this is a good opportunity, and I don’t want to waste it.”
Torreira’s father, Ricardo confirmed early this month that a programme is being prepared to help his son to settle in England once the transfer gets completed.
“There will be people that will accompany him. He won’t be alone. It’s a big change [going to England] and we don’t want to think about it yet because we’re scared. The truth is it’s tough to manage the language, adapt to the [London] society and customs and at the same time not lose ours. But there’s a whole programme getting readied for Lucas,” he said.
Torreira is set to join Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bernd Leno and Sokratis Papastathopoulos at Arsenal. Sampdoria have already prepared for Torreira’s departure by signing Czech Republic international midfielder, Jakub Jankto. He previously got linked with Arsenal, from Serie A rivals Udinese.
Arsenal asked Torreira to fly straight from Russia to England. And, having touched down in London, he is expected to undergo a medical at London Colney on Monday.
The midfielder apologised for not being able to travel back to Montevideo right now. However, he says he will return ‘very soon to greet everyone’ once his move to Arsenal is confirmed.
