Atletico Madrid have finally found a back-up for Antoine Griezmann. A talented Gelson Martins has signed a six-year contract after taking advantage of chaos at Sporting Lisbon.
Gelson Martins has 140 appearances for Sporting.
Martins, who came through the same academy as Luis Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo, scored 27 goals with 30 assists in 140 appearances for Sporting. He also has 19 senior caps with Portugal. He has played against Morocco in the FIFA World Cup 2018 which Portugal won 1-0.
Martins is expected to join Atletico’s preseason training alongside others who were at the World Cup but did not make the final stages of the tournament. Atletico Madrid said in a statement,
“Our club is incorporating a pacy right winger who has also been deployed as a second striker and even right-back. His speed and fine dribbling skills make him a valued addition to our team and a threat to the opposition’s defenders.”
Martins is Atletico’s fourth addition this summer. Following the €70m signing of France international winger, Thomas Lemar from Monaco, Spain midfielder Rodrigo’s €20m return from Villarreal and goalkeeper Antonio Adan joining from Real Betis, Athletico has got Martins.
Sporting have also lost Rui Patricio, William Carvalho, Bryan Ruiz and Christian Piccini. They also lost their coach Jorge Jesus as a result of the turmoil surrounding the club.
Ahead of their pre-season tour, Diego Simeone said,
“A year is beginning from which Atletico Madrid fans expect a lot. I am happy to be returning to such a nice competition. For many years we have been working as a club to get to this level. The club is growing and reaching important places. We are competing against two top clubs. We always take things game by game, and the important thing is to play well tomorrow against Arsenal.”
“I feel that the club is growing strongly and that brings growth in the team. There is evidence — like the stadium, and our ability to compete in our own way with the best around. That brings enthusiasm,” he concluded.
