Transfer Latest: Axel Witsel Joins Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund have signed Axel Witsel from Tianjin Quanjian. The deal for the Belgium midfielder is worth €20 million.

Borussia Dortmund announced the arrival of Witsel on Monday.

Dortmund just added another player to their new look midfield on Monday. The move took longer than expected to complete. But Witsel still will have a decent time to gel with the team in pre-season.

Witsel played for the semi-finalist Belgium in the World Cup in Russia. He played every minute of 6 of the Red Devils’ 7 games in Russia. He struggled in their defeat to France. But otherwise had an impressive tournament.

According to the potential of Witsel, his career took a strange turn. He came up through the youth ranks at Standard Liège before signing for Benfica at 19. Then he was in Portugal or one season before he made a big money move to Zenit Saint Petersburg

He won the Russia league title once and then he moved to Chinese League to play for Tianjin Quanjian. When it looked like his career is going to the wrong track, Dortmund’s call has given the 29-year old midfielder a hope to take his career on high once again.

It seems the World Cup has re-awakened his desire to play in Europe. Still, the Bundesliga is a significant step up from the Portuguese League. Witsel will team up with Thomas Delaney in the midfield who also joined the team this summer.

He will be the third Belgian player to ever play for Dortmund. Adnan Januzaj was the first while Michy Batshuayi was the second. Januzaj’s career with Dortmund was not good as it was expected.

However, Batshuayi played exceptionally well for the German side. But he had to go back to the English club Chelsea as he was on loan. Now its time for Witsel to turn the table.
