AS Roma almost signed Brazilian forward Malcom. They also posted on their official Facebook page on Monday that an agreement has been signed. However, a twist in the tale changed the scenario completely.
Barcelona hijacked the deal at the last minute to sign Malcom.
The player was expected to arrive in Rome on Tuesday to undergo a medical and complete the move. But, he did not travel given Barca’s late interest in him.
And, according to the latest report, Barcelona have agreed a €41 million (£36.5m/$48m) deal to bring Bordeaux forward Malcom to Camp Nou. A deal with the Spanish champions has now been agreed. Malcom is now all set to sign a five-year contract with Barcelona.
Roma posted in a statement on their official social media channels on Monday,
“AS Roma confirms that it has reached an agreement with Bordeaux for the transfer of the player Malcom. The operation will be ratified following the successful completion of a medical.”
The Blaugrana want to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new Liga season, and in the end, they have hijacked Roma’s deal.
Barcelona was heavily linked with Chelsea’s Willian in the last few days. But Malcom became their primary target after a campaign during which he scored 12 goals and laid on eight assists in all competitions.
He had previously attracted interest from both Arsenal and Tottenham. The North London rivals both made their interest known during the January transfer window.
Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Inter and Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with his signature while Everton made a bid this summer.
But Roma won the battle with Everton. He will now, though, become Barcelona’s second major signing of the summer window.
