UEFA Super Cup Final Bayern Munich vs Chelsea Preview
Albert Einstein said and I quote “Everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control. It is determined for the insect, as well as for the star. Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper.”
I don’t know how factual or erroneous he was in saying that but certainly some things in world are just meant to happen. A battle that started over in Spain with Pep Guardiola managing Barcelona and Jose Mourinho taking over Real Madrid’s management has rowed its destiny boat and managed to clash once again over at the Eden Arena in Prague.
The match will mark the first ever UEFA Super Cup between a pair of consecutive UEFA Champions League winners with Chelsea winning the 2011–12 UEFA Champions League, coincidentally defeating Bayern Munich in the final and Bayern Munich who won it this year beating Borussia Dortmund in the final.
Jose Mourinho has never had a chance to be in a UEFA Super Cup before with him leaving Porto and Inter Milan immediately after winning the Champions League with them on separate occasions and hence never won or even participated in this Cup. Pep on the other hand has already once this cup twice in 2009 and 2011 respectively and will try to make it a hat-trick of wins for himself.
Bayern Muncih have several injury concerns with key men Javi Martinez and Thiago Alacaranta on the sidelines. Bastian Schweinstiger also limped off in the game midweek against SC Freiburg. The Blues from London have no injury scares but the forward line will be frustrating Mourinho. Torres looks a shadow of his previous self, while Ba hasn’dt just simply delivered and Lukaku needs some time to settle. The experiment to play Andre Schurrle’s up front didn’t pay dividends against Manchester United on Tuesday as well. What the front line of Chelsea will be is surely tough to predict.
Since early reports suggest that Bastian’s injury was just a mere ankle sprain and he might be able to start against Chelsea I’ve put him as the single pivot. In case he’s injured Lahm would replace him in the defensive midfielders sort of role and Rafinha would take over the right back spot.
Chelsea will obviously rotate their wide players i.e. Hazard, Mata and Oscar. The main concern for Chelsea will be to get the ball off Bayern Munich who will precisely want to keep the ball and play their natural game of possession, just the way Pep likes it. But Chelsea with Mourinho’s counter attacking traits and pace in their attack might just rely on it to beat the German side.
It’s going to be a cracker of the game and regardless of which of the two managers come out on top, expect Bayern Munich to keep a lot of possession and Chelsea to happily let them play in their own half but press them at every possible chance they get.
So will Jose Mourinho win his 1st UEFA Super Cup in his very first attempt and add to the numerous trophies that he has won over the last decade or will Pep Guardiola make sure that a German club wins this cup for the first ever time, we will get an answer in Prague on Friday night.
