United already eyeing this Chelsea target as their potential January signing

Manchester United are already plotting a fresh attempt to sign Fabinho during the January transfer window after missing out on the Monaco full-back this summer, according to Manchester Evening News.

Jose Mourinho made four excellent signings during the summer months with Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan all arriving but he did miss out on one key target last month.

The MEN claim that United made enquiries for Monaco right-back Fabinho and were hopeful of landing the player before Wednesday night’s deadline but saw their attempts knocked back by Monaco.

Fabinho has developed into one of the best attacking full-backs in French football since joining Monaco in 2013 and Mourinho knows him well from their time together at Real Madrid where the 22-year-old spent time on loan.

United weren’t the only club linked with the Brazilian international as the Daily Star reported last week that Chelsea had joined the Red Devils in showing a keen interest in signing the defender during the summer.

Antonio Conte was desperately trying to bring in a couple of defenders during the closing stages of the window and it appears Fabinho was on his radar before the Chelsea boss ended up signing Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina.

We’ll have to wait and see whether the Blues have retained an interest in Fabinho but the Manchester Evening News claim that United are still keen and are keeping a close eye on the players situation ahead of a fresh attempt to land him in January.

Monaco were able to keep hold of the full-back after qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League but they’ve been handed a tough group having been drawn to play Tottenham, Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow.

Should they fail to progress to the knockout stages then Fabinho may push for a move this winter and it appears United will be ready to try and lure him to Old Trafford if they can get a deal agreed with Monaco.

And Fabinho isn’t the only player Mourinho is eyeing in January as the Manchester Evening News also suggest that United are continuing to monitor Raphael Varane’s situation at Real Madrid having failed to land the French international this summer.

Varane is another player Mourinho knows well from his time at the Bernabeu and the Portuguese coach has made no secret of his admiration for the centre-back so it comes as no surprise that the ‘Special One’ is keen for a reunion in Manchester.

However, it’s not going to be easy to sign the 23-year-old as he’s highly regarded at Madrid has has started their first three games of the new season so there is very little chance he’ll be sold in January if he continues to be an integral part of Zinedine Zidane’s team.
