Video: What Happened When Messi Was Asked To Say “I love Egypt”
It can be tough being a top professional footballer – and even more so if you are Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, having to deal with incessant requests from seemingly all sides.
Usually, the likes of Messi and Ronaldo deal with the demands from fans, sponsors and the media with admirable patience, but it all appeared to get too much for the Argentine on Egyptian TV.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was in Egypt to promote awareness for Hepatitis C when he was asked to repeat “I love Egypt” live on TV. Repeatedly.
In what was a highly awkward exchange, Messi rebutted the intrepid presenter’s requests, even when he pleaded with the Barcelona superstar to say the three words.
Messi finally ended the debacle with four words of his own:
“No, no, no, gracias!”
Sometimes ‘I love Egypt’ are the hardest words… for Messi, it seems.

However, there was another unwanted controversy surrounding the Argentine superstar’s visit to Egypt.
The country’s best-known archaeologist has apologised after he angrily called Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi “an idiot” because the striker seemed to show little interest during a tour of the Giza Pyramids.
Zahi Hawass, famed for his Indiana Jones hat and TV specials on Egypt’s ancient sites, showed Messi around the Pyramids last month. In a TV interview, he was asked about the Barcelona striker’s reaction.
“Messi is an idiot,” he snapped. “I was explaining the antiquities to him and there’s no reaction in his face. I was explaining things that would make a rock react, but he was just like an idiot.”
In a statement, Hawass said he was expressing anger over an inefficient interpreter.
“I apologise to Messi and his fans for the misunderstanding,” he said.
