Paul Pogba arrived at Manchester United with more expected of him than any other player in the club’s history.

Still just 23, the club parted with a record £89 million for his services. A majestic performance against Southampton in his first game back only heightened expectations further. His influence waned in the following games and United’s good results went with it. Deployed in various roles, often in an unfamiliar number 10 spot, he struggled to exert himself in games.

A humbling defeat at Chelsea forced Jose Mourinho to rethink his plans for the Frenchman and United haven’t looked back since. They’ve gone unbeaten in sixteen subsequent games in the league and, bar a horror show against Liverpool, Pogba has been immense.

Ander Herrera’s introduction alongside him has been key to the former Juve midfielder’s enhanced performances. The stability provided by the Basque has allowed Pogba to get further forward despite being given a more defensive brief.
