There were some unusual scenes at the Old Trafford last night as Sir Alex Ferguson was seen celebrating a goal against Manchester United and the man responsible for the change was fan favourite – Robin Van Persie.
As expected, the Dutch striker received a hero’s welcome when he returned to Old Trafford with new side Fenerbahce for the Europa League tie. The Netherlands international was signed by Ferguson in 2012 and became an instant hit with the Old Trafford faithful after scoring 31 goals in United’s title-winning 2012-13 campaign.
However, he failed to replicate that form after Ferguson retired after that season and the striker was eventually sold to Fenerbahce in 2015.
Meanwhile, it was a perfect night for the home team and fans as the Red Devils thrashed the Turkish outfit by 4-1. Record summer signing Paul Pogba was in ominous form as he scored a brace to lead the Red Devils to a comprehensive win. Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard were on target too.
The icing on the cake was the goal from Van Persie in the 83rd minute. The goal was given a round of applause by the home fans and Van Persie’s former boss was seen leading the celebrations from the directors’ box. The Dutch striker too acknowledged the reception and thanked the crowd for the same.
