I Want To Be An Anfield Legend Says Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho After His New Contract
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have been slowly sliding down the Premier League points table as they now sit in the 4th place, 10 points off Chelsea at the top of the table.
The Reds managed to take just 2 points from three game against Manchester United, Sunderland and Swansea this month and were also knocked out of the League Cup semi-final by Southampton earlier this week, making this January a disappointing one for the Anfield faithful.
But the fans of the club received great news earlier this week after the club officially announced that star playmaker Philippe Coutinho signed a new long term deal at the club.
The Brazil international is among the most exciting players in his position in the league and has 6goals and 5 assists to his name in the Premier League this season. He was named the player of the year for the last two seasons for the Reds and is easily their most important player in the squad at the moment.
He was linked with a move to Barcelona and PSG earlier this month but Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool were adamant to keep him at the club and got him to sign a new 5-year contract that will keep him at Anfield till 2022.
He is also set to be the highest earner at the club after the deal and the 24-year old finally opened up about his new contract recently.
Speaking to the media, Coutinho spoke about the timing of the new deal and revealed that it was always on his mind to put pen to paper.
He went on to explain that he wants to be among the greats of the club and that he has not thoughts of leaving anytime soon.
“I understand what Liverpool means. We can say [Kenny] Dalglish, [Ian] Rush, [Alan] Hansen, [Graeme] Souness, [Luis] Suarez, [Steven] Gerrard. I’ve been here quite a few years already, it’s not like I am new. I understand,” he told The Daily Mail.
“To have signed a new contract at this club, my goal is to be thought of one day in the same way as these players. They are legends. You define the success of a player by his loyalty or his titles. Or both. In order to be part of this group, I have so much to do,” he added.
He also went on to say that winning titles is what he wants to do at Anfield and that his team are now on course to doing it in the next few years.
“I believe in finding somewhere you can express yourself, play without fear, play with everything you have. When you find that place, stay. This club, Liverpool, it has a plan. To be back on the top and that’s what I believe in. I want to be part of that,” Coutinho said.
“From the owner, the manager, my team-mates. There is nothing that stops us competing with the big clubs. Clubs in England. Clubs in Europe. Yes, clubs like Barcelona. Why not?” he added.
Though Liverpool are yet to win a major honor in the last 4 years, Coutinho felt that he has the opporitnuty to do so in the 5 years he will stay at the club.
He said, “I want to win titles. Five years is my new contract… it gives me that opportunity.”
This interview will come as a huge boost for Liverpool who will not have to worry about losing him for atleast another couple of years and can look at strengthening the other areas of the squad.
