Chelsea visited Vicarage Road for the first time in seven years, in the league, to take on the difficult assignment of beating Watford at their home. Watford have been punching way above their weight in the table and have been delighting the fans with their stout defence and continued that trend here, albeit with a lot of luck, and kept out Chelsea while posing a minimal threat themselves in a drab 0-0 draw.
Here are the player ratings:
The keeper was inspired and made a total of zero mistakes on the pitch. The collection skills were largely on point and very impressive as he alleviated the aerial threat of Watford with some decent collections. Distribution was slightly lacking in an overall virtuoso performance from the Belgian.
Was never overlapped or let any cross evade his foot and as usual, dominated his flank. Did look uncomfortable with a couple of passes and clearances, but that was rare. Managed to keep Jurado at bay whenever he crossed over to his flank.
Dealt with Ighalo extremely well and was always ready to push ahead. Showed great composure on the ball and managed some decent passes to spread out the play. Was occasionally made uncomfortable with Ighalo’s dribbling but never let him go.
The best young centre-back in the league was back at it again and managed to shut out the aerial threat of Deeney, especially in the second half. Needs to be more of a threat while attacking corners but did his job description to the point and kept the Watford duo at bay.
Was decent but with Mikel faltering, was always overrun with Holebas or Jurado waiting to pounce on any sort of space. Did lose his positioning trying to support the attack and needed better protection from Willian.
One of the best matches for Matic this season as he dominated proceedings all along and was the only player who could stand up the niggly and dirty play of Watson and Capoue.
Disappointed in the first half as he looked out of sorts. Managed to turn it around in the second half where he was back to being a rock ahead of the defence for Chelsea.
Impressive match from the Brazilian who almost scored a wonder goal with Hazard-esque dribbling. Managed to pry open the Hornets’ defence more than a couple of times but poor coordination from his teammates left him in the lurch.
Man of the match performance yet again from the Spaniard who always managed to embarrass Watford players with a smart touch and then opened up space to find sublime through balls for the likes of Costa. Dropped deeper in the second half to devastating effect.
Disappointing match for this Brazilian as he was wasteful with all the crossing as well as set pieces. He managed to hold on to the ball well but all that was for nought with his wayward passing.
Decent performance from the striker who managed to rile the opposition with great direct play. Was targeted as usual by players like Prodl and Paredes but gave back what he got and managed to keep his cool.
Great impact play from the Belgian who was always a threat. Should have had a goal and a couple of assists but it was just not meant to be for him. Will be looking forward to some game time now that he has recovered.
