Wayne Rooney Picks Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo
Despite playing eight years together at Manchester United in England, Wayne Rooney dumped Cristiano Ronaldo for Lionel Messi in the debate of who’s better amongst both.
Rooney played with Ronaldo for eight years at Manchester United.
On the ‘Pardon My Take’ podcast, Rooney was asked which player he preferred, and instantly replied with “Messi”. When asked the reason behind it, Rooney said,
“Yeah, I think I’ve said this before, but they’re both probably the best two players to ever play the game. I just think Messi is, in my eyes, the greatest ever.”
Both players struggled to replicate their brilliant club form at the World Cup consistently. Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in his opening game against Spain and then the winner against Morocco.
However, his influence couldn’t inspire Portugal to go past Uruguay in the last 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia. While Argentina only just escaped their group and were subsequently downed by eventual champions, France.
Both Messi and Ronaldo are unlikely to lock horns this season unless Juventus draws against Barcelona in the Champions League. Indeed, Ronaldo’s move to Italy marks the first time in just over a decade that the pair will not be in the same division.
And, the club’s sporting director has admitted the stunning move came from a “crazy idea”. It formed after his brilliant overhead kick goal at Allianz Stadium in 2017-18.
The fans in Turin also gave a huge round of applause after the goal. And after the end of the match, Ronaldo said in an interview that he felt humbled and very appreciated. Fabio Paratici told Sky Italia,
“The crazy idea started after the crazy goal he scored against us. (Ronaldo’s agent) Jorge Mendes told us that Cristiano was stunned by the attention he received, he said that one day he would like to come to Juventus.”
Ronaldo was presented as a Juventus player in Turin on Monday.
