Manchester United captain and star striker Wayne Rooney has set a target for himself for the upcoming season. Speaking to reporters the English star said that he is glad that manager Louis van Gaal has decided to play him as a striker this season and he will look forward to scoring 20 or more goals this season.
Manchester United last season had 3 star strikers in their squad, as a result Van Gaal opted to bring Rooney down to the midfield and he played a number 10 role.
Now that Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao have left Rooney will feature upfront.
The English man has scored 230 goals in his entire Manchester United career playing in several positions. At 29 the player still expects to score goals and lead his team to glory.
Roonet was quoted: It’s where I like and I’m sure it’s where I will play. It’s obviously on me to score goals. It’s where the manager and myself see my best position. Hopefully I can get a good run of games and repay the manager and score goals for the team.
I’ve played different roles over the years for United but you only have to look when I play for England as a striker I score goals. I hope to score 20 or more goals again. If I’m playing as a striker, then I will be disappointed if I can’t do that again.
I’m excited about the season. It’s a big season for us. We have the quality to make sure we get back into the Champions League.
He recalled the 2009-10 and 2011-12 when he had scored more than 30 goals and had won the title for his team. He added: That was the last time I really played the full season as a striker. All the other seasons I have been up front, then in midfield or out wide, so hopefully if I stay up front then I can get near that again.
