Jesse Lingard continued his love affair with Wembley, finding the back of the net but it was Swedish international Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who opened the scoring and also scored the winner in a 3-2 thriller at the weekend.
This will denote decent progress under the new manager and the fans will be over the moon having lifted 2 trophies in the space of 9 months under two different managers.
But however sweet this victory was, sweeter it was for United, the fact that they equaled Liverpool’s trophy tally with this victory. Or surpassed them as some say!
The Red Devils have been one of the most successful English clubs in recent times but they were in the shadows of the Red of Merseyside who had more trophies than them until Sunday.
However, this League Cup victory will push Manchester United to 41 major trophies, making this victory a record-equaling one.
Liverpool previously stood alone at the top of the honors chart with 18 league titles, seven FA Cups, eight League Cups, five European Cups and three UEFA Cups in their history.
But United’s victory over Southampton will now mean that they are level on top with their rivals.
The Red Devils now have 20 league titles, 12 FA Cups, 4 League Cups, 3 European Cups, 1 Cup Winners’ Cup, and 1 Intercontinental Cup.

The trophies considered as ‘major’ are those earned through playing a whole season, tournament or competition, so no ‘one-off match’ silverware has been included in the overall table, such as the Charity Shield or Super Cup.
