Liverpool have announced that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss the 2018 World Cup with a knee ligament injury.
The England midfielder suffered the injury in Liverpool’s 5-2 Champions League win over Roma on Tuesday.
The news is a bitter blow for the 24-year-old, who was enjoying a strong second half of the season with the Reds.
Oxlade-Chamberlain will also miss the rest of Liverpool’s season which includes the second leg of the Champions League semi-final next week in Rome, as well as a potential final on May 26.
After just 18 minutes of Tuesday’s match Oxlade-Chamberlain was forced off the pitch after catching his knee on the pitch while attempting a sliding challenge.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted the injury did not look good after the game, telling BT Sport: “Oxlade-Chamberlain’s is probably a really bad injury.”
On Wednesday, the Reds did not confirm how long the midfielder is expected to be out for, only saying “no specific timescale is being placed upon his return to action at this stage.”
