A Closer Look At Real Madrid's Number 10 Curse 1

Real Madrid are easily the best club in Europe at the moment as they recently managed to become the first team in more than 58 years to lift the Champions League trophy in two consecutive years.

Zinedine Zidane, the current manager at the club, also managed to help the club lift their first league title in more than three years and the club as such is in a very comfortable place right now.

So the manager does not want to waste any more time and is looking to make some necessary additions to the squad to make sure that they can compete at the highest level next season.

This will see him let go of a few players this summer and one of the first big names to leave the club is Colombian international James Rodriguez.

The 25-year old completed a two-year loan deal with an option to buy to German giants Bayer Munich and it once against brought forth the curse of the number 10 at the Bernabeu.

The No.10 Curse

Los Blancos have always had some of the finest players playing in this role for the club over the years.

Since the turn of the century, however, Portuguese star Luis Figo was the last players to have enjoyed a stellar success at the club.

The former Inter Milan attacker joined the club in 2000 and spent five years at the Bernabeu, winning almost everything possible, before leaving to the San Siro in 2005.

However, ever since, Real have found it hard to stick with one player for more than three years.

It started with Brazilian attacker Robinho, who took over the number from Figo.

Though he started with some sizzling displays for the club but failed to keep up the good work, getting kicked out after less than two years, as he joined Manchester City in a €42m deal almost a decade ago.

Then came Dutch star Wesley Sneijder and German playmaker Mesut Ozil, both of who promised so much more than they could deliver in their time at the Spanish capital.

Rodriguez falls to the curse

And it was not different for the Colombian playmaker, who though put in some brilliant displays, some match winning ones at that, but failed to establish himself in the first team, in his three years at the club.

He sported the number 10 jersey in his time at the Bernabeu and surely, the next player to take the number will be wary of this curse.
