Manchester United have not managed to show any progress in the domestic league as they finished in the sixth place, even after stitching a 25-game unbeaten run this season.
However, they have already won the League Cup and are also in the finals of the Europa League, where they have a shot at qualification into the Champions League next season.
If they fail to beat Ajax in the final, the Red Devils will be suffering from a similar season next time around and that could be disastrous.
Lack of top flight European football will have its own monetary effects but it will also reduce United’s power of attracting top talents to the club in the summer.
One such player United might miss out on this season is Antoine Griezmann.

The French international is among the best strikers in the world and has been in tremendous form for the Spanish outfit this season.
He has 26 goals and 12 assists in all competitions this season and has helped Atletico Madrid to the semi-final of the Champions League, which they lost to local rivals Real Madrid over two legs.
Though he has often revealed that he is happy at the Vicente Calderon, Griezmann has been linked constantly with an exit this summer with Chelsea and Manchester United desperate for his signature.
With Zlatan Ibrahimovic not expected to stay at the club next season, Mourinho is looking at some of the best players in Europe for a move this summer and Griezmann is at the top of his wishlist.
There has been a lot of debate whether Griezmann will want to move to Old Trafford this summer and the player himself has now given a hint over his future destination.

Appearing on a French TV show, the 26-year revealed that moving to Manchester United is not a distant possibility.
When asked on French TV show Quotidien what the chances of him joining Manchester United are on a scale of one to ten, he replied: ‘Six.’
The reporter replied ‘That’s quite a lot, you understand what you’re saying…?’ to which Griezmann said: ‘Yes.
When asked whether it was the first time he’d said it, Griezmann responded: ‘Yes, the first time.
This got a number of Manchester United fans excited as it is now just a matter of winning the Europa League final on Wednesday.
Griezmann will surely cost a record fee but Mourinho is prepared to meet his valuation and may well spend in him this summer.
