Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has backed striker Olivier Giroud as the Frenchman continues to be linked with a move away from Emirates this summer.
The 30-year old had a frustrating last season with the club as he was primarily used as an impact substitute by Arsene Wenger. Giroud had expressed his disappointment over his role multiple times last season over his lack of playing time.
He is high on many clubs’ wish list this summer as there are numerous clubs that are chasing to sign him. However, Arsene Wenger is very clear to convey the message to Giroud that the player is important for the team’s need next season.
‘It has been a frustrating season for him because he has not played a lot. And when he has played well, he has not always played the next match,’ Wenger said.
‘He has won us a lot of points when he has come on because he has scored lots of times. He has qualities that our team need.’
Back in March, Giroud admitted to his frustration over a lack of games, saying: ‘It is true that I am seeking more playing time with my club and that I need to play matches consistently in order to feel good.’
Giroud had scored 16 goals for Arsenal in 40 appearances across all competitions last season. However, the bulk of his appearances came as a substitute as he came as a super sub in the FA Cup final to set up the winner for Aaron Ramsey.
Wenger is believed to be looking for a world class striker this summer and the club are linked with the likes of Kylian Mbappe from AS Monaco and Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon. However, this could also means Giroud could be on his way out as he eyes a place in 2018 World Cup France national squad.
Lack of playing time next season would seriously hamper his chances of making it to the world tournament. The French star had fallen down the pecking order as Wenger decided to use Sanchez as his center forward despite having out and out striker in Giroud. He is being linked with London rivals West Ham United and Ligue 1 club Marseille as he looks for most playing time and could be playing for another club next season.
