Indian Women’s hockey team defeated China 2-1 to clinch the Asian Champions Trophy 2016 title on Saturday. It was a spirited performance by team India, who won the match 32 seconds before the final whistle. This was the first time that Indian women have won the Asian Champions Trophy.
In the first quarter, both teams tried their best to score goals but could not convert any chances in the first 12 minutes. In the 13th minute, India earned a penalty corner and Deep Grace Ekka scored a goal to give India 1-0 lead and maintain it at the end of first quarter.
The second quarter saw China dominate the proceedings. The Indian defense was pretty solid as they saved all the attacks that China made.
In the third quarter, China earned two successive penalty corners but could not convert them. In the final few minutes, China scored the equalizer to level the score at 1-1.
The fourth quarter proved to be a tough tussle between the two teams. India went for all-out attack and they earned a penalty corner 32 seconds before the full-time and Deepika Thakur converted it into a goal to leave China in shock. At the end of final quarter India won the match by 2-1.
The previous best performance by the India Women’s team was in 2013 Asian Champions Trophy, where they finished runners-up.
