Novak Djokovic, ranked 4th currently according to the latest ATP rankings and a former World No.1 might have to give U.S. Open 2017 a miss. The Serbian is facing a bruised elbow bone and according to the doctors it will take around 12 weeks to heal.
The Tennis Federation of Serbia’s doctor said that Djokovic is almost out of the U.S. Open and an official statement regarding his withdrawal will come in a few days.
Zdeslav Milinkovic, the doctor said that due to “excessive play”, Djokovic needs 2 to 3 months of rest. Although the symptoms are declining, his elbow needs rehab to avoid a surgery. It will be wise if Djokovic takes an off from the U.S. Open for a quick and easier recovery.
“The symptoms have calmed down, he was with a specialist at Toronto for additional tests. He also consulted our experts, of course, because we are great friends.
Djokovic retired from the Wimbledon quarter final match against Berdych this year because of his elbow injury and it was expected that he would miss the U.S. Open. According to Djokovic, this has been a matter of worry since the last one and a half year. He has met with specialists in Torronto who will decide the further schedule for the Serbian.
Djokovic missing the U.S. Open Championships will mean that it will end his 51 grand slam match run and also will lead to a drop in his rankings
On other hand, Djokovic and his wife Jelena are expecting their 2nd child in the coming weeks. So, a time off won’t be that bad either as he can have a good family time.
It is disappointing to see a talent like Djoker missing the U.S. Open. 2017 hasn’t been the best time for him as he lost his no.1 ranking, and also didn’t win a single grand slam in this year. Both Federer and Nadal have dominated the Grand Slam arena this year, with Federer leading 2-1. U.S. Open will be a chance for Nadal to equalize it.
Novak Djokovic has previously won 2 U.S. Open titles in the year 2011 and 2015. In all, he has 12 Grand Slam titles, 4th highest no. of grand slams won in Men’s singles Tennis.
In other news, Andy Murray, the current World No.1 has had a successful treatment with his injured hips and is ready to play the U.S. Open.
The U.S. Open 2017 will start on August 28 and will end with the men’s singles final on 10th September.
