Manchester United (MU) midfielder Ander Herrera thinks his teammate David de Gea will stay at the Old Trafford because of the die-hard fans. The shot-stopper currently has a contract with the club until next summer.
However, the management has the option to extend his contract for an additional year. This would surely keep him at the club till 2020 and the Red Devils are thinking to keep him longer with a new contract.
De Gea was constantly linked with a move to Santiago Bernabeu over the past four years.
Moreover, the shot-stopper was very close to joining Spanish giants, but failed to secure a move courtesy of a failed fax machine.
However, since that incident, de Gea grew as a star with his tremendous performances for the club from time-to-time. Recalling those days, Herrera revealed why the goalie will stay at Old Trafford.
“I remember that difficult summer when everyone was talking about Real Madrid and he played the first game at Old Trafford and everyone was singing his name and he told me ‘this is amazing, they are the best’,” said Herrera.
“He can be very calm but he’s the best. He will show it again. He’s the best keeper I’ve ever seen in my life and he is with us so we have more chances to win titles,” he maintained.
Herrera Backs de Gea to overcome World Cup woes:
Considered as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League and amongst the best in the world, de Gea did not have a great World Cup. He committed some casual errors during Spain’s World Cup campaign.
But Herrera thinks that the focus is more on the player, since his is the best in the world.
“He is the best goalkeeper in the world, by far, and he will show it again. When you are the best goalkeeper in the world and you don’t make those amazing saves, everyone is going to talk,” he said.
“When I don’t play very well, I don’t get that criticism because I am not one of the best in the world, but he is, so it’s normal and he will cope with it,” he further added.
David de Gea already has the backing of manager Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese tactician always backed the Spaniard ever since he took charge in 2016.
There is also a growing belief that the club is close to their next Premier League triumph.
MU just finished second to glorious Manchester City (MC), who broke all the existing Premier League records on their way to glory. If MU has to win silverware next season, a fit and confident de Gea could make a world of difference for the team.
