The Delhi Capitals (DC) have decided to part ways with two of their assistant coaches in Ajit Agarkar and Shane Watson of Australia and announced the news on social media on June 29, 2023.
The duo had joined the Delhi Capitals franchise after the IPL 2022 mega auction and much was expected from DC support staff which has Australia legend Ricky Ponting as their head coach and recently got Sourav Ganguly to become their director of cricket once more, after his tenure as the BCCI President ended.
However, the fate of the franchise continued to tumble as they failed to make the top four in IPL 2022 and had even bigger misfortune as they lost Rishabh Pant as their captain for the IPL 2023 season.
Pant was involved in a serious car accident in December 2022 and has been recovering from the same ever since. He missed the IPL 2023 for which the Delhi Capitals appointed David Warner as their captain.
The team could win only five out of 14 matches to end at the ninth position in the points table. Even in IPL 2022, DC had not made it to the top four of the tournament.
“You’ll Always Have A Place To Call Home Here”- DC Parts Ways With Ajit Agarkar And Shane Watson
There was a lot of criticism of the team management and many speculated that there might be big changes coming as the DC side prepares for the next season of IPL in 2024.
Many speculated that Delhi Capitals management might remove Ricky Ponting from the head coach position and instead appoint Sourav Ganguly in his place. But Parth Jindal, the co-owner of the franchise, dispelled those rumors as he revealed that both Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly will continue in their respective positions for one more year.
However, the same fate didn’t happen with assistant coaches Ajit Agarkar and Shane Watson, as he they have been sacked by the franchise. The duo joined the management of Delhi Capitals after IPL 2022 mega auction.
However, now Delhi Capitals have decided to make way for new faces and also because Agarkar is heavily tipped to be the new chief selector of the Indian men’s team.
“You’ll always have a place to call home here. Thank You, Ajit and Watto, for your contributions. All the very best for your future endeavours,” DC tweeted.
