Dipa Karmakar, the sensational female gymnast from Tripura is now awaiting a wild card to participate in the Rio Olympics next year.

The 22-year old gymnast has finished in the fifth position in the ongoing World Championship in Glasgow, having scored 14, 683 in her one and only vaulting event.

Dipa would have qualified for the Rio directly is she was a podium finisher by winning a medal. Even, she could have earned a berth for the Olympics directly if she had finished fourth in the vaulting event.

It has been learnt from the Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) that the participant in the World Championship who has scored formidable individual points would be kept in the reserves and the reserves might have a last minute entry in the tournament like Olympics with wild cards.

Speaking on the issue over phone from Glasgow, Dipa regretted saying, “I am not at all happy with my performance as I was mentally prepared to score more than 15,000 in my event. Although, the extremely cold weather in Glasgow had been difficult for me to adjust. Still it cannot be an excuse.”

Karmakar informed she would try to know about her status before she leaves Glasgow today late night. She said, “I have heard that a meeting regarding our status, has been going on. I will try to know. But so far I have heard that the international body will inform the respective countries only after a month.”
