Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres have been offered a massive 12 million euros a year deal to sign for Mexican club Querétaro but El Nino will sign a new one year contract with his home team, according to reports in Spain.
The 33-year old was expected to leave the club at the end of the season but Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban meant the club are determined to keep hold off their players.
After making both Antoine Griezmann and Koke sign new deals earlier this summer, the club have reportedly turned their sights to their striker Torres who will be signing contract extension in the coming days.
Spanish media outlet AS claims that the forward have already agreed personal terms with the club over a contract extension but the club are currently working on minor details in the contract. A new deal meant Torres would be at his boyhood club for one more season and will be at the inauguration of Atletico’s new Wanda Metropolitano stadium at the start of next season.
The Spaniard is arguably the greatest striker in the world during his time with Liverpool before ha made a controversial move to Chelsea in a £50million deal. However, lack of form at Stamford Bridge meant he was soon loaned out to AC Milan and returned back to Atletico Madrid.
Torres has been a wonderful squad player for Diego Simeone over the past three seasons as he played understudy to other strikers and was crucial in their recent success as well. The Argentine manager used Torres in the best way possible.
But Atletico’s transfer ban meant that they cannot sign any players this summer. Chelsea’s Diego Costa is unhappy at Stamford Bridge but cannot make a move back to Atletico despite his open admiration for Los Rojiblancos.
Torres have drawn interest from the likes of Besiktas, Cruz Azul and Guizhou Hengfeng Zhicheng, coached by former Atlético manager Gregorio Manzano this summer but it is understood that he will now stay at the club for at least another season.
