Mary Kom’s Medal in her Maiden tournament:
Mary Kom has become one of the most successful female boxers in the world with her performances. However not many people are aware of the fact that when she appeared on the scene as an 18 year old. She went into the World Amateur Boxing Championship just to make up the numbers but she surprised everyone when she ended up winning the silver medal in her category. She has not looked back since as she won each and everything she could.
Mary Kom’s First World Championship Gold Medal
After winning Silver as an 18 year old in Scranton, USA, MC Marykom steeped up her game and escalated herself to the top of the podium of the 45 Kg category in the 2002 Antalya World Amateur Boxing Championships. It was her first Gold medal in her career and went on to pocket 12 more in the future including five in the World Championships. She is still hungry for more medals as she has set her sights on the 2015 World Championships and to earn a direct entry to the 2016 Rio de Janerio Olympics.
“Magnificent” Mary Kom Honoured by IABA
After her outstanding performances in the year 2007, the International Amateur Boxing Association realised that she had made a telling contribution in creating interest in women’s boxing and in her honour she was given the nickname ‘Magnificent Mary’ after she won the 2008 Ningbo City World Championships.
Mary Kom’s Olympic Medal
Olympic Medal is a dream for each and every athlete who represent their country. The same applies to MC Mary Kom as well. For the first time in her career, women’s boxing was included in the Olympics and she set her eyes on winning an Olympic Medal straightaway. Mary Kom received a huge blow ahead of the Olympics as her coach Charles Atkinson was not allowed to enter the Olympic village due to a technical issue. But Mary rose to the occasion and did it on her own as she went to claim the Bronze medal for her country.
Mary Kom’s Asian Games Gold
Five World Championships, Five Asian Championships, Olympic Medal. She had won everything but for an Asian Games Gold. She won a Bronze in 2010 Guangzhou Games and was hungry to win a Gold medal in the next edition at Incheon. When the Incheon Games went underway, Mary Kom took her boxing to yet another level as she punched out each and every one who came her way in the quest for Gold. With this medal, she also compensates for missing the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games due to some internal issues.
