Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh said that BCCI must pay well for the selectors of the Indian Cricket Team so that former players can aspire to become the selector. Indian selectors are often criticised for selection in ICC events as India failed to win a single ICC trophy since the 2013 champions trophy held in England.
Harbhajan Singh at an Idea Exchange session of The Indian Express stated that players who have a reputation for playing more games for India should be provided with an opportunity–and also stressed that these players will take up roles only when they are given handsome pay.
“A man with stature, one that has played the game quite often, will solve a lot of issues at the selector level. But why wouldn’t they take up the opportunity? I’ll give the example of Virender Sehwag. If you ask Virender Sehwag to become the chief selector, then the salary of that post needs to be analyzed,” Harbhajan said.
“If you don’t spend money, then you will have to choose selectors from players who may have only played a year and might not be that big a name. If a man like Rahul Dravid is made the coach, then the chief selector must have the same stature as well,” Harbhajan added.
Harbhajan also stressed that BCCI should increase the pay of the selectors, Otherwise, players who played more for India will be less interested in the selector’s job and continued that if Rahul Dravid is the coach, the chief selector must also have the same calibre like him.
