Olympic Gold medalist and Indian hockey legend Mohammad Shahid took his last breath today (Wednesday) July 20, 2016, in Gurgaon. On Tuesday, the 56-year old ‘s condition deteriorated further as he slipped into a coma and has been put on the ventilator. He was admitted at Medanta Hospital Gurgaon.
Shahid had been suffering from liver and kidney ailment that has triggered when the legend ignored as a bout of jaundice. Earlier, MoS (PMO) Dr Jitendra Singh had announced a grant of Rs 10 lacs for Shahid.
Shahid’s employer Indian Railway had also announced that they would take care his medical expenses.
The Hockey player from Benares has won the 1980 Olympic Gold medal in Moscow and was the captain of the national side from 1985 to 1986. He was a skilled forward of the Indian team. His skills left many defenders stunned.
Shahid’s illness has caused concerns among all across the sporting fraternity, and current Sports Minister Vijay Goel, who was appointed Sports Minister in the cabinet reshuffle, had also paid a visit to the ailing hero of the Indian Hockey.
The whole nation was praying for a speedy recovery of Mohd. Shahid, but finally pain has engulfed the nation as Shahid bid adieu the world.
In 1981 he was conferred with the Arjuna award and in 1986 he received the Padma Shri award from the Indian government.
In 1980 Champions Trophy in Karachi he was named as the “best forward of the tournament.” He also won the 1982 silver medal in Asian Ganes and bronze in the 1986 Asian Games. His skill and reputation helped him to earn a place in the Asian All Star XI.
