Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag believes that the Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill shouldn’t be satisfied by the runs he scored in this edition of the Indian Premier League. The 23-year-old played a match-winning knock of 94 runs from 51 balls against the Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday.
The Indian opener has been the leading run scorer for Gujarat Titans with 469 runs at an average of 46.90 and a healthy strike rate of 43.32 in the league stage.
Virender Sehwag believes that Shubman Gill should bat better in the league, being the all-format for the Men in Blue, as he should try to use his better form for the defending champions and feels that he would finish the tournament with 600-700 runs at the end of the tournament.
“It should’ve been better. His 375 in 10 matches should be around 550 by the end of the season. He’s played India in all formats, he’s scored big runs and should be using his form better. When he finishes the season, he may have 600-700 runs,” Virender Sehwag said in Cricbuzz
In 2023, Shubman Gill is having a dream run with the bat for the Men in Blue, scoring hundreds in each of the game’s three formats, and will be a vital player for Rohit Sharma’s team in WTC Finals against Australia and ODI World CUP later this year.
The Number Haven’t Change Much – Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag said that he wouldn’t be happy if he had been Shubman Gill as he scored only 469 runs in 11 innings he played for the defending champions in IPL 2023 and feels that he should play with more positive intent and also wants him to change things around for his side.
“If I were Shubman Gill, I wouldn’t be happy with myself. I had been in good form, and I’ve scored 375 runs. But there isn’t much improvement. The numbers might have slightly improved, but it’s quite marginal. He looks good while playing his shots, he comes out with a positive intent”.
“But overall, the numbers haven’t changed much. I hope in his last four matches, he shows the class that he has displayed for the Indian team. I want a century from him,” Virender Sehwag added
Hardik Pandya-led side is comfortably placed at the number one position in the points table with 16 points and is on the verge of making it into the playoffs for the second consecutive time in the IPL 2023. Defending champions Gujarat Titans will take on five-time champions Mumbai Indians in their next game on May 12 in their away game at Wankhede Stadium.
