Kalinga Lancers had a consolation of beating champions Delhi Waveriders 2-1 to end the Hockey India League campaign at the Major Dhyand Chand Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday evening. It was a good performance by Kalinga Lancer’s team after such a disappointing tournament.
In the first quarter Delhi began off to a positive start but missed too many chances of scoring goals. Kalinga Lancers also missed a few chances they got including the last minute penalty corner that was well saved by the Delhi goalkeeper. At the end of first quarter it was 0-0.
The second quarter saw Delhi playing attacking hockey. Kalinga Lancers hit a shot from outside “D” but Rupinder Pal Singh one of the best defense known in India saved the goal and Delhi. In the 8th minute Delhi missed another chance. In the last 1 minute Delhi earned a penalty corner and Jermey Hayward scored the penalty corner into a goal to give Delhi 1-0 lead.
The third quarter was an exciting hockey as both of the teams played some good. The first positive came from Delhi they missed a chance from an open goal. In the 8th minute Kalinga Lancers earned two penalty corners but were not able to convert any chances into goal. In 9.05 minute Kalinga Lancers missed another chance. In 9.30 Kalinga Lancers Zwyiczki converted a field goal to make it 1-1. In the last few seconds Kalinga Lancers again missed a chance of field goal. At the end of third quarter it was 1-1.
The fourth quarter saw an attacking hockey from Kalinga Lancers. They took the lead in the 4th minute when Russell Ford hit a reverse flick shot past the goalkeeper to make it 2-1. In the 8th minute Delhi Wave riders missed a chance of converting a field goal. In the 9th minute Kalinga Lancer’s goalkeeper made an excellent save. In the 11th minute Delhi Wave riders earned a penalty corner but could not convert into the goal.
With this win Kalinga Lancers ended the campaign with 18 points.
