The New Day, KofiMania

Early Days of the New Day

In 2014, Kingston teamed up with Xavier Woods and Big E and formed a faction named The New Day. The faction is still intact after a decade and it is considered one of the best factions in the history of professional wrestling. Some critics and fans even consider it the best ever stable in professional wrestling history.

Championship Success

All the members of the faction achieved a lot of success. They achieved solo success as well as success as a team. Together they have won a total of 12 Tag Team Championship reigns. Among them, there were a total of 4 RAW Tag Team Championships, 7 SmackDown Tag Team Championships, and one NXT Tag Team Championship.

They also achieved singles success. Woods has been the least achieved star among the three of them. The only singles success he could win was the King of the Ring tournament of 2021, which by the way did not make much difference to his career. Both Kingston and Big E had been WWE World Champions one time each.

KofiMania

In 2019 there was a short time period of Kingston’s main event run. This time period is famously known as the KofiMania. It started after the Royal Rumble event of 2019 when WWE finally felt that they should give a World Championship reign to Kingston. He entered the Elimination Chamber to challenge for the WWE championship.

However, he lost the match but he was the finalist who got eliminated by Daniel Bryan at the end. Once again he got the opportunity to challenge Daniel Bryan for the WWE championship but this time the stage was even bigger, he got the chance to challenge Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35. He shocked the entire world when he defeated Daniel Bryan to win the WWE championship and this was the ultimate beginning of KofiMania.

He had a WWE Championship reign of a total of six months and it was one of the best reigns of the WWE Championship of the time. He defeated some of the biggest names to keep on retaining his championship. He also received an excellent main event push from the Viper Randy Orton. In short, KofiMania was an excellent time.

The Tragic End of KofiMania

This Championship reign continued for 6 long months but it ended in an absolutely awful way. Brock Lesnar challenged him for the championship in an episode of Smackdown in October. It took him only 8 seconds to beat Kingston and take the championship away. Kingston and his epic KofiMania reign had been completely buried.

Recent Days

This incident always remained one of the most criticized booking decisions in WWE history. After this defeat, Kingston completely lost his main event push, and at this moment he is nothing but a lower mid card. After WWE unified the Tag Team championships, The New Day is also pretty much dead. Kingston will always be remembered as one of the biggest legends of WWE and professional wrestling.

Iconic Quotes From Kofi Kingston

“We always talk about how important representation is. It’s so important to see someone that looks like you – whether you’re African American, Asian, Indian or whatever your background is – doing incredible things. It’s just motivation to go out there and do incredible things yourself.”

“It’s always important for people to be able to watch WWE, especially because it’s a global product, it’s important for people all over the world to be able to look at the screen and see somebody who looks like them doing great things. And in turn, that inspires them to do great things.”

“You know, ‘people like us,’ it involves… it’s everybody who has struggled, you know what I’m saying? Everybody who has… who has had a difficult time getting to where they want to be, and now they can look at us as examples of, ‘Hey, I can do this because they did it and I see it happening. Maybe I can do it, too.”

“With Punk, I consider him to be like a brother to me. He’s one of the guys who took me under his wing when I first came. So we’ve been able to maintain a good relationship. And there are very few people in the business that you can call true friends, so I consider Punk to be that and more. So yes, ‘road wife’ is the term we used to sum that all up.”

“When I was training before I was even signed, I was listening to the Damian Marley CD ‘Welcome to Jamrock,’ and I got the idea one day in promo class to cut a promo in a Jamaican accent and everybody in the class went wild. That was the character I played from that point on and it kind of stuck until it didn’t.”

“My dad is actually from Ghana in West Africa, and I was actually born in Ghana, too, and came to the United States when I was two years old. It’s always football over there, soccer, but becoming a Massachusetts native, you can’t help but get sucked into all the sports.”

“I realized a very long time ago, that I was never going to be the guy who, ‘Oh, you look so big, let’s push him in the main event and see,’ or, ‘Oh, this guy’s got the best physique ever, let’s put him in the main event and see.’ It was always going to be the hard way.”
