Electronics giant LG has decided to withdraw their sponsorship from the hard-hitting batsman David Warner in the wake of the ball tampering scandal. Further, LG said that the current deal with the opening batsman was in its final weeks.
“In light of recent events, we have decided not to renew our partnership,” a spokeswoman said. “LG Australia will always look to work with ambassadors that share our core brand values, and we take these relationships incredibly seriously to ensure we put our customers, employees, and stakeholders first,” she added.
Meanwhile, Warner signed with the company in late 2014 praised the company’s OLED TVs in advertisements.
“I love my OLED. It’s one of the things I look forward to when I come home,” Warner said in one advert. “I wish it was compact enough that I could put it in my suitcase and take it away,” he added.
Meanwhile, Steve Smith, Cameron Bancroft, and Warner will return to the country and will take no further part in the series. Wicket-keeper batsman Tim Paine will lead the team in the rest of the series. They have added Joe Burns and Glenn Maxwell as the replacements.
However, coach Darren Lehmann will continue to work as the head coach until the end of his tenure.
The swashbuckling opener has followed his skipper’s footstep and stepped down from the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s captaincy role. However, their participation in the Indian Premier League is still not clear.
Meanwhile, Warner’s website states he is a brand ambassador of Gray-Nicolls, Asics, Channel Nine, Toyota and the Make-a-Wish Foundation. It will be interesting to see what decision the other brands takes as it will be a huge loss for the cricketer.
