Time for the speeches
First up is the president of the Rio 2016 committee Carlos Nuzman. Nuzman competed at the Tokyo Games and is credited as revolutionising the sport of volleyball in Brazil.
He is also regarded as the man who conceived the idea of Brazil hosting the Olympics. Following him is IOC president Thomas Bach, a man who has had plenty on his plate of late with the Russian doping scandal.
“We are living in a world of crisis, mistrust and uncertainty,” Bach said.
“Here is our answer….athletes living peacefully in one Olympic village, sharing their meals and their emotions.
“In this Olympic world there is one universal law for everybody, in this Olympic world we are all equal.
“In this Olympic world we see the values of our combined humanity are stronger than the forces that want to divide us.
“So I call upon you the Olympic athletes, respect yourself, respect each other, respect the Olympic values which make the Olympic Games unique for you and the entire world.”
Bach also paid homage to the refugee athletes.
Refugee team get their moment
We’re close to the end now and the refugee team has just entered the arena to raucous support, only to be topped moments later by the sight of the home nation making their way onto the Maracana to a chant of ‘Brazil, Brazil’.
Plenty of camera flashes going off as well in the packed arena. Definitely one of those moments when the hairs stand up on the back of the neck.
It’s been a tough few months with security concerns and worries over the state of facilities, but the day has arrived and thus far it has gone off without a hitch. The fans are loving it. So too are the Brazilian athletes as they dance with beaming smiles on their faces.
Hopefully it’s a sign of things to come.
Where is Usain Bolt?
Big shout-out for Jamaica as well, although chances are most of that attention was aimed at sprinting giant Usain Bolt.
