Liverpool and Manchester City have joined the race for PSV Eindhoven’s winger Cody Gakpo and currently holding talks over a possible summer switch to English Premier League. The Dutch versatile winger is in great form this term with 6 goals and 10 assists in 15 Eredivisie matches. Other top European clubs are also interested in Gakpo this summer but it’s Premier League giants who have stepped up their efforts.
The 22-year-old Netherlands forward came through the academy ranks at Boeren and made his debut in 2018. Since then he has scored 21 and assisted 24 goals in 80 league appearances. His vision to create chances for forwards, work rate, pace, and his ability to play on both wings and forward position make him a standout player for the future. He also made his national debut last year and has scored 1 goal and assisted 1 more in 4 appearances for Luis Van Gaal’s side.
Cody Gakpo’s current contract at Philips Stadion expires in 2025 but PSV are looking to extend his contract to 2026-27 to ward off interest from the Premier League giants. But this has not deterred Liverpool and Manchester City and their consistent efforts will definitely unsettle the player to consider his future this summer. PSV are mounting an Eredivise title challenge this season and were leading by 1 point to Ajax after 19 matches but they lost by 1-2 at home against Ajax this Sunday, who are now leading the league table by 2 points. So finishing this season as Dutch champions will give them an upper hand negotiate Gakpo’s deal with a higher transfer fee.
Cody Gakpo Talks About Liverpool And Manchester City But Is Focused At PSV:
Gakpo has revealed that he has received offers from foreign clubs this month and he has been in touch with his agent to discuss his future. Both Liverpool and Manchester City have quality options on the wing and it will not be easy for Gakpo to break into regular first-team and replace current stars. According to Voetbal International, Liverpool and Manchester City are holding talks with Cody Gakpo’s agent over a possible summer switch.
‘The clubs that want something are also known to me, I’ve had conversations about that with my agent. Very interesting clubs have been added, but we have to look at what the first step is. At the moment my focus is not there and I had better things to do on Sunday.’ – Cody Gakpo.
Manchester City secured Argentine forward Julian Alvarez yesterday but are yet to make an official announcement. The departure of Ferran Torres to Barcelona and Bernando Silva’s possible summer exit has opened a door on wings at Etihad Stadium. Liverpool are also looking for long-term options in attack as star trio Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino have just 18 months remaining on their Anfield contracts. Mane and Firmino are expected to leave this summer and rotational striker Divok Origi will be leaving on a free transfer as his contract expires this June.
