A few days ago, positive news was available on Rey Mysterio who might have decided to stay with the WWE in the future. But that’s not true as the high flying superstar has reportedly not signed a new WWE contract, according to Dave Meltzer in the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Jim Ross stated on his own podcast, earlier this month, that he believes that Rey Mysterio recently inked a new WWE deal. Dave Meltzer then added on Twitter, in response to the rumors on Rey Mysterio leaving WWE, that he “isn’t going anywhere”, for the time being. It seems like he has backed down from his own update.

The Observer has now reported that Rey’s contract is indeed coming to an end but he had not inked a new contract, for the time being. Rey Mysterio is not expected to leave WWE, but it’s not a lock, either.

It was noted by the source that one of the key aspects to Rey’s status is the future of his son, Dominick. The belief is that he won’t do anything that could upset the WWE officials and then negatively impact Dominick’s career.

Apparently, Rey Mysterio possesses a high-contract with the WWE who doesn’t want him to work for New Japan Pro Wrestling. After WWE locked in their TV deals with FOX and USA Network, they were able to give him all the money he needed,

“Rey was reportedly able to negotiate an 18 month contract out, and the feeling behind that was that it would be perfect timing to be a free agent. However, this was before the coronavirus pandemic hit and now is not the perfect time to be in need of work.” (Courtesy wrestlingINC.com)

It’s being rumored that AEW will also show interest in Rey Mysterio in case WWE leaves him in the future but a jumping ship situation isn’t expected given that AEW’s financial situation is also different from how they have begun the journey. Also, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the pro-wrestling climate is quit tumultuous, at this point.

In the meantime, WWE did an injury angle for Rey Mysterio on this past week’s RAW with Seth Rollins. It was apparently done to either give him a feud with Rollins if he stays with the company or else it will be used as a storyline to write him off the TV if he leaves. As of now, WWE.com offered an update on the kayfabe injury stating the following,

“Doctors cannot properly assess the damage to his retina until the swelling subsides, as Rey is currently at-risk for infection.”
