Former India opener Aakash Chopra has weighed in his thoughts on India’s 18-member squad as he noted down some absentees in the squad and stated that there was no explanation given by the BCCI on certain absentees like R Ashwin, Rahul Chahar, and Varun Chakravarthy. Chopra also pointed out that Ishan Kishan was in the ODI squad against South Africa but now he’s dropped from it without getting any game.
On Wednesday, BCCI announced an 18-member squad for the white ball series against West Indies starting on February 6. Rohit Sharma returned to lead the team while the selectors made wholesale changes in the bowling department after facing a thrashing defeat by South Africa.

“Hope he’s given chances and not sidelined straightaway like Rahul Chahar”- Aakash Chopra
Speaking on his youtube channel, Aakash Chopra pointed out some missing members in the squad as there was no statement released by the BCCI about their absence.
“About Ashwin, I don’t know. It was reported that he won’t be available for 1.5 months but BCCI hasn’t released anything like that. Nothing has been spoken about Rahul Chahar or Varun Chakravarthy. We really didn’t know where these guys are,” Aakash Chopra said.
Ashwin has picked 9 wickets in 5 T20I games since his return in the shortest format while Rahul Chahar and Varun Chakravarthy were also part of the T20 World Cup. While Chopra is delighted for Ravi Bishnoi for his maiden India call, he urged selectors to give every player a longer rope, rather than judging them on basis of one or two games.
“Ravi Bishnoi is picked for the first time. No one is talking about Rahul Chahar, which is very very surprising. Venkatesh Iyer is dropped, I believe, because he played two ODIs (in South Africa).
“Deepak Hooda is getting an opportunity, who provides an off-spin option. Even Ishan Kishan is no more a part of the team. It’s very interesting because all these guys (who are not a part of the squad) were picked only a few months ago in the T20 World Cup and I thought ‘Are you going to back them?’ It doesn’t seem the case,” he added.
Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami have been rested from the series.
KL Rahul will be available from 2nd ODI onwards.
R Jadeja is undergoing his final stage of recovery post his knee injury and will not be available for the ODIs and T20Is.
Axar Patel will be available for the T20Is.— BCCI (@BCCI) January 26, 2022
“Rahul Chahar and Varun Chakravarthy were both part of the T20 World Cup side and now they’re both sidelined. In the previous T20I series, Chahar was unavailable and it was stated that he is unfit. But there is no discussion about him anymore. Ravi Bishnoi is now the flavour of the month and I really really hope he’s given chances and not sidelined straightaway like Rahul Chahar,” he further added.
