The Spanish trio Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez are set to play in the Davis cup in order to secure their place in the Rio Olympic games 2016.

Rafael Nadal, will play for Spain in the Davis cup coming September against Denmark in order to qualify for the Rio Olympics 2016. The 29 year old has not been part of the Spanish Davis cup team since 2013 and this will be his first match since then.

Nadal has played only one of Spain’s last nine Davis Cup preliminary rounds, and needs to play three more to meet Olympic regulations. Ferrer and Lopez both need to participate in two more ties

Having won the tournament five times in eleven years at the turn of the millennium, Spain now find themselves in dire straits.

The five-time champions were relegated to the Davis Cup’s second tier for the first time in 18 years last September, following a shock 3-1 defeat to Brazil.

The Spanish Davis cup team looked really down without the likes of David Ferrer and Rafael Nadal. 2015 has not been a great year for the Spain. However, the victories for Tommy Robredo and Pablo Andujar put their team in a decent position.

The return of the Spaniard Rafael Nadal would be a huge boost for Spain.
