India’s quest for their first medal in the ongoing Rio Olympics will continue when their athletes take the field on the seventh day of the sporting extravaganza.
Just like the previous five days, the sixth day did not bring much good news for the Indian fans who are desperately waiting to see the first medal from their athletes.
India’s men’s and women’s hockey teams were at the wrong end of the result. While the men’s team lost 1-2 to the Netherlands the women were thrashed by USA by 3-0. After losing today’s group match against the Netherlands, India had to win their last game in order to qualify to the next stage. But the equation changed later today after Germany vs Argentina match ended in a draw and Ireland defeated Canada. After 36 years, India have made into the knock-out stage.

In boxing Shiva Thapa lost his prelimenary bout and crashed out after losing to a tough opponent in Cuba’s Robeisy Ramirez 3-0.

Two of India’ brightest medal prospects- Deepika Kumari and Bombayla Devi- who were in action in the pre-quarters matches of archery failed to replicate their previous day’s form and crashed out of Rio Olympics.
In tennis the mixed double pair of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna defeated Australian pair of Samantha Stosur and John Peers 7-5, 6-4 to qualify for the finals.
In badminton, Saina Nehwal, PV Sandhu and K Srikanth registered victories and qualified for the next round. In women’s doubles Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa lost to their Japanese opponents. In men’s doubles event Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy lost to Indonesia’s Ahsan Mohammad and Setiawan Hendra 18-21, 13-21.

In golf men’s individual round 1, India’s Anirban Lahiri ended the day at +3 over par and S.S.P. Chawrasia ended at even par.
Well, the Indian athletes would be hoping to bag the first medal on a fresh day.
