Indian cricket has entered a new era as Rohit Sharma walked out for the toss in the first test match against Sri Lanka in Mohali on Friday. Rohit Sharma saw quite a few ups and downs in his career in the red-ball format. Firstly he had to wait for more than 6 years to get a breakthrough in Test Cricket.

Rohit made his ODI and T20I debut in 2007 however he had to wait till November 2013 to get his Test cap. In February 2010, he was all set to get a chance in the Test playing XI but right before the toss, he got injured and fell behind in the pecking order.

Then his Test career got a break when he was given the responsibility to open the innings against South Africa in October 2019. He scored more than 529 runs in 3-match series and that was a huge turnaround in his test career. More than two years later, he has become India’s 35th captain in the longest format.

In the pre-match conference when he was asked to sum up his test career, he stated that it has been many ups and downs in his Test career but he is not much bothered about his past. He also stressed that team goals are more important for him than individual ones.

“My targets are set for the team. I am not thinking about myself. I am happy with 40 [Tests]. I don’t have regrets. Quite a few injuries, quite a few ups and downs, but that goes on in life and in cricket. You will never get a smooth ride in cricket.

“The ups and downs will teach you a lot. Now I don’t have personal targets that I have to do this, I have to do that. In front of me is a big job. I am just thinking we have to do well for the team,” Rohit Sharma said.

So far in his career, he played 43 tests and scored 3047 runs with an average of 46.87 which included 8 hundreds.
