Former India opener SS Das, who is part of the current BCCI selection committee, might become the new interim head after Chetan Sharma resigned from his post on February 17, 2023, in the aftermath of the sting operation done on him.

Chetan Sharma, who was in his second term as the chief of the BCCI selection committee, was caught in a sting operation conducted by the ZEE media on February 14, gossiping about players and claiming the widespread use of unsanctioned injections to pass fitness tests.

Since then there were speculation about whether BCCI will fire him as the chief of the committee or will he step down voluntarily. Chetan was in Kolkata along with other selection committee members for the Ranji Trophy final between Bengal and Saurashtra, tendered his resignation to the BCCI on February 17 and it was accepted by the BCCI.

“Chetan has tendered his resignation to BCCI secretary Jay Shah and his resignation has been accepted. His position had become untenable after the sting operation. He resigned voluntarily and wasn’t asked to resign,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity on Friday.

It is learnt that Chetan’s alleged remarks did not go down well with the BCCI top brass, and the current national squad members also lost trust in him after his allegations that players took injections to pass fitness tests.

“Coach Rahul Dravid, captains Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya have completely lost faith in him. He couldn’t have possibly sat across the table along with them for selection committee meetings as he had lost all respect. He paid the price for being a big mouth,” said another BCCI source.

Chetan was allegedly lured into the sting operation on the pretext that his inputs were required for research work for a docu-series.
