Former Liverpool stars Steve McManaman and Glen Johnson have shared their thoughts on a rumor of Liverpool targeting Arsenal midfielder Bukayo Saka. Glen Johnson last week urged Liverpool to complete the Saka deal at any cost but now club legend Steve McManaman has ruled out any chance of Saka becoming a Liverpool player in the near future.
On 31st December 2021, The Transfer Window Podcast presenter Ian McGarry confirmed that Liverpool have added Bukayo Saka to their shortlist and it will be a priority area for the Reds in the upcoming summer. Since then there have been a lot of rumors and talks regarding this but no official offer or contact has been made by Liverpool for the Arsenal star this month.
The 20-year-old English international entered the scenes at Emirates Stadium through academy ranks which he joined at the age of seven. He made his senior debut in 2018 and since then has made 110 appearances with 18 goals for the Gunners. He also became the second-youngest player after Nicolas Anelka to score the fastest 10 league goals for Arsenal. This season he has been a regular starter on the right-wing position for manager Mikel Aretats and has scored 6 goals and assisted 4 in 20 Premier League matches. Saka has also cemented his place in England’s national team recently and has already made 14 appearances.
Bukayo Saka has certainly established himself as one of the best players in recent years and will be the face of North London giants for many years to come. Arsenal will not be entertaining any bid from any team for sure unless the player is unsettled at Emirates and wants to move to another club, which is not the case, yet.
Glen Johnson Feels It Will Be A Good Move For Both But Steve McManaman Can’t See Liverpool Signing Saka:
Saka is equally capable of playing on both wings and Glen Johnson believes that will suit Liverpool perfectly. Both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are current wingers at Anfield but both have just 18 months remaining on their contract. It has been reported that one of them will be leaving the Reds in summer as both turn 30 of age in the next five months. Both Salah are attacking-minded wingers and usually cuts inside from the wing which can be perfected by Saka, according to respected journalist Duncan Castles.
Former Liverpool full-back Glen Johnson believes that this deal is appealing for both parties, especially for Saka to join such a big club at an early age. But he also insisted that this will be a complex and expensive deal considering a rival English player.
“In terms of Liverpool and the player being interested in a move then I believe that for sure. But I just think it would be quite a complex deal to pull off. I do think it would be a good move for Saka. Any chance you get to sign for one of the best teams around, as a young player, it’s going to be appealing.” – Glen Johnson on Saka.
Liverpool legend Steve McManaman, who played as a winger for Liverpool for 10 years after coming through academy ranks, thinks that this deal will never happen and if it happens then there will riots at Arsenal. He is in favor of Liverpool signing such an incredible player but can’t see Arsenal selling their best player to a rival.
“I can’t envision that move happening. He’s one of Arsenal’s star men. I’ve seen a lot of Arsenal this season and Buyako excites me more than any other player in their side. “However, there’s no way on earth that Arsenal will let him go unless it’s a case of his contract running out. He’s such a young lad but still a leading figure in that Arsenal side and he’s improving every single year, so there would be riots if Arsenal let him join Liverpool.” – Steve McManaman on Bukayo Saka to Liverpool rumor.
Both Liverpool and Arsenal are facing each other at Emirates Stadium in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals fixture tonight. The 10-men Gunners managed to hold the Reds in a 0-0 draw at Anfield in the first leg last week after Granit Xhaka was sent off early in the game.
