The 2022 edition of the T20 World Cup has kicked-off in Australia. A lot is expected from Team India this time around, especially after their poor campaign last year. Although they suffered a couple of injuries, their bench strength should make up for it.
The Indian batters will be under scrutiny to put on a solid performance this year. In the 2021 edition, they miserably failed to provide enough room for the bowlers.
The Men in Blue did well in their warm-up game against current world champions Australia. A similar sort of performance is expected from Rohit Sharma’s side throughout the tournament.
Without any ado, let’s look at three Indian batters who can score the most runs in the marquee event.
1) Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav has been on a tremendous run ever since making his T20I debut in 2021. In a very short time, he became the No.1 ICC ranked batter in the concerned format, currently he is at No.2.
In 32 appearances, the right-handed batter has already smashed 1045 runs at an average of 41.8 and an astonishing strike-rate of 177.4, including a century and nine half-centuries.
Even in the warm-up game against Australia, Yadav scored a quick fifty before throwing away his wicket. If he continues his red-hot form, he could be the most successful batter in the tournament.
2) Virat Kohli
The run-machine Virat Kohli made a strong return to form in the 2022 Asia Cup, where he scored his maiden T20I ton and two half-centuries in five games. He was also the second-highest run-getter of the continental cup, just behind Pakistani opener Mohammad Rizwan.
Although he has failed to show consistency in recent games, this showpiece event could be his tournament. Kohli reaches a whole new level in the T20 World Cups and his record is proof of this statement.
The Indian giant has 845 runs in 19 innings to his name in the T20 World Cups. Moreover, he is the only cricketer to win two Player of the Tournament awards (in 2014 and 2016) in history. If he manages to find rhyme in the early stages of the event then it will be very hard to put a break on his run.
3) KL Rahul
Indian opener KL Rahul is another top contender to be the highest run-scorer of the tournament. T20 cricket is by far his strongest format and he loves to score runs with consistency.
In addition to that, the pace and bounce on Australian pitches suit his batting style as the right-handed batter likes balls coming nicely on the bat. In the warm-up game against Australia, he went all guns blazing as he amassed 57 runs off just 33 deliveries.
This shows that Rahul is in good shape and form. If he manages to get a good start to his innings, he usually bats long and ensures to get as many runs as possible. He would definitely love to script history this time.
