Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has confessed that a report that he told FIFA he initiated contact with Inter Milan over a potential move was absolutely nonsense.
Luka Modric was highly linked with Seria A club Inter Milan.
After the successful World Cup campaign, Modric was highly linked with Inter Milan. With Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, it looked like the Croatian midfielder is also on his way to Seria A.
Real Madrid also reported to FIFA over an illegal approach made by Inter Milan. The club were unhappy with Inter’s willingness to speak openly about the possibility of a deal with the midfielder.
In an instagram post on Tuesday, a report claimed that Modric admitted that he approached Inter Milan first.
The Real Madrid midfielder responded to the post saying “The greatest nonsense in history”.
According to , La Gazzetta dello Sport, Modric took responsibility for initiating the negotiations. Because he wanted to join up with Croatia teammates Ivan Perisic, Marcelo Brozovic and Sime Vrsaljko.
The Instagram post says:
“Real Madrid filed a complaint to FIFA against Inter Milan for violating Article 18 of the transfer regulations by contacting a player directly without the permission of the parent club. According to La Gazzetta Dello Sport, FIFA called Modric after receiving the complaint from Real Madrid and Modric said that he was the one who contacted Inter and not the other way around because he wanted to play with his three compatriots (Perisic, Brozovic, Vrsaljko).”
However, he is yet to sign a new contract with the Los Blancos. His current contract expires in 2020. According to reports, Madrid is preparing to offer him a new contract.
Meanwhile, Inter Milan manager said that Modric wanted to join the club. But he knew that the deal was unlikely to happen.
“That he has shown interest to join us is obviously positive. We are trying to create the right conditions for him to join Inter Milan.”
